How is Julius Randle feeling about his fit with Michael Porter Jr. following his surprise trade to the Nets?
Julius Randle is stepping into a new but familiar role with the Brooklyn Nets this season. After spending the last four years as a lead option on playoff teams, Randle will attempt to lift the Nets out of the NBA’s basement in 2026-27. He’ll have an accomplished co-star, Michael Porter Jr., alongside him during that pursuit.
Randle feels he and Porter can complement each other effectively as they lead Brooklyn’s offense.
“It’s gonna be great,” the Nets trade acquisition told Gabriel Martins of his fit alongside Porter. “You know, we’re two completely different players, as far as like style of play. And I think we actually complement each other very well. I can do a lot with the ball off the dribble, creating. And he’s a great catch-and-shoot guy who can really space the floor. So I think we’ll complement each other very well.”

Randle remained one of the NBA’s more efficient regular-season scorers last season. The 6-foot-9 forward averaged 21.1 points on 48.1 percent shooting with 6.7 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game across 79 appearances.
Randle was one of six players to average over 21.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists on 47.0 percent shooting or better, alongside Nikola Jokic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Luka Doncic, Jaylen Brown and Jalen Johnson.

General Manager Sean Marks feels Randle’s on-ball scoring will lessen the offensive burden on recent draft picks Egor Demin and Mikel Brown Jr.
“He’ll absolutely [take pressure off our young guards]. You see what Julius can do with the ball in his hands,” Marks said at Summer League. “He’s a great passer, great facilitator, a high IQ player, can take big shots, not afraid of the moment. So all of these are good lessons for guys. You’ve got to put some stability around these young guys. So when you add a vet like that, who has seen it, been there and done that before, and is not afraid of that moment; those things are [critical]. I hope our guys jump on that train with them and they learn those lessons from it.”
Meanwhile, Porter enjoyed the best statistical season of his career in 2025-26 as the Nets’ No. 1 option. The 6-foot-10 sharpshooter averaged 24.2 points, 7.1 rebounds and 3.0 assists on .463/.363/.859 shooting splits.
Porter posted a +9.8 offensive rating swing (team points scored per 100 possessions with a player on vs. off), the NBA’s seventh-highest among all players who played over 400 minutes, per CleaningTheGlass.
While Randle and Porter should elevate the Nets’ league-worst offense, they’ll also shoulder a heavy burden defensively. Brooklyn is lacking rim protection with Day’Ron Sharpe and Moe Wagner penciled in as the center rotation. Meanwhile, the rebuilding squad is inexperienced in the backcourt, with Demin and Brown likely filling starting roles.
Marks challenged Randle and Porter to meet the challenge defensively.
“I think when you have guys who can play at that level offensively, that will cause defenses hopefully some trouble. But at the same time, this is an opportunity for those guys to prove that they can do something else in part of their game, too,” the GM said. “We all know how Jordi’s gonna want to play. Jordi’s gonna want to play with a high pace and the right way, but you’re gonna hang your hat on the other end of the court as well. Defensively, not only Julius and MPJ, but the entire roster- our expectations are diving on the floor for loose balls, being a disruptor, hands in the passing lane, and just playing a brand of basketball that the borough can get behind.”
