After the talented wing chose to leave the Denver Nuggets for the Cleveland Cavaliers this offseason, Aaron Gordon shared an honest reaction to the departure of his close former teammate.

“That’s my dog,” Gordon told reporters during his Colorado minicamp. “It’s deeper than basketball with Peyton and I. Our family members go to the same church. Peyton is like my brother.

“Happy for him, the situation that he’s in. Obviously we would have loved to have him. But it worked out the way that it should of — it was supposed to.”

Peyton Watson leaves Denver Nuggets for Cleveland Cavaliers

In a massive multi-team trade, Peyton Watson departed the Denver Nuggets and joined the Cleveland Cavaliers this offseason.

Accordingly, Watson signed a new four-year, $88 million contract as part of the sign-and-trade agreement.

Watson’s free agency drew buzz and rumblings all throughout the offseason. Facing significant cap restrictions, the Nuggets have had no choice but to let Watson leave as a restricted free agent despite their desire to keep him.

Watson emerged with a 2025-26 breakout season by averaging a career-best 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.1 assists, but hamstring injuries limited him to 54 games and hurt his momentum for Denver.

After spending four seasons in Denver and becoming a part of their 2023 NBA title team as a rookie, Watson is now a key part of the Cavaliers’ championship-seeking core with Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen.
