The Wizards are keeping one of their most trusted veterans around.
Washington officially re-signed forward Anthony Gill, the team announced. Contract terms were not disclosed, though the deal is expected to be for one season near the veteran minimum.
Gill, who turns 34 in October, averaged career highs of 5.8 points and 2.9 rebounds in 55 appearances last season. He made eight starts and shot 62.8 percent from the field.
The statistics are only part of Gill’s value. Josh Robbins of The Athletic reported that Washington’s coaches and front office appreciate the way Gill mentors teammates, accepts a limited role and remains willing to fill virtually any frontcourt position when needed.
The Wizards had kept their final standard roster spot available in case another team offered a draft asset to take on a guaranteed contract. Nothing apparently materialized, so Washington used the opening on a player it already knows and trusts.
Gill went undrafted out of Virginia in 2016 and began his professional career in Turkey before spending three seasons with Khimki in Russia. The Wizards brought him to the NBA in 2020, and he has remained with the organization ever since.
This won’t alter the Eastern Conference standings or dominate debate shows. It should make a young Wizards locker room a little better.
