A: Because not every player wants to take a non-guaranteed deal and then be locked into that spot for the balance of the preseason. Using your example, what if, say, Jalen Brunson were to be lost to the Knicks during the preseason for any significant period of time? That certainly could make them more amenable to offer a guaranteed deal. Same for any other team that might lose a point guard to injury. It is why it is somewhat surprising that Nick Richards took his non-guaranteed deal for quickly from the Heat, when there is a chance a contender could potentially lose a big man during camp or the preseason. Now, for a Cam Thomas, it probably is about just into a camp. But some veterans have the right to be more discerning.
Q: Will Pelle Larsson become the Jaime Jaquez Jr. of the second unit? It would be great if Jovic could have a Jaquez-like turnaround but Pelle is more consistent. – Phillip, Portland, Ore.
A: Of all the elements that have been mentioned about potentially being lacking from this revamped roster, it will be interesting to see who steps forward as a second-unit energizer, similar to what Jaime Jaquez Jr. offered last season. Pelle Larsson certainly could prove to be that player, with the benefit of also being a better defender. Similar energy has yet to be shown from Nikola Jovic. Of course, with a new roster and a new system, such an energizing role might not be as necessary.
Q: Is Tre White going to camp with the Heat? He looked good in summer league. – Thomas.
A: Perhaps, if he doesn’t receive a fifth season of collegiate eligibility, currently involved in one of the many NCAA lawsuits, in his case one filed in Indiana. It could be among the reasons the Heat are holding spots open on their camp roster below the 21-player offseason maximum. He played well enough in summer league to potentially earn a two-way contract.
