The Dallas Mavericks ended up hiring Michigan’s Dusty May as their new head coach, but Duke’s Jon Scheyer was a name linked to the opening.
On Thursday, Scheyer addressed those rumors publicly, and in doing so, he made a strong commitment to the Duke program.
“I know I’m right where I’m supposed to be. Not many people can get their dream job at 33. I’m in this for the long haul with Duke.”

The Mavericks parted ways with Kidd in May, and it came after five seasons and one NBA Finals trip.
The Mavericks reportedly had interest in Scheyer, but ultimately, they hired May in a stunning surprise. The move came just months after Michigan won the NCAA Tournament. Ultimately, the uncertainty around college athletics and the opportunity to coach Cooper Flagg were two big driving forces for May to make the move.
Scheyer replaced legendary Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski. Scheyer has a 124–25 record in four seasons, which includes three Elite Eight trips and a Final Four appearance, so Duke fans were more than happy with him staying in Durham, N.C.
