“Some low-level executive called me” – When Cousy vented on being fired as Celtics analyst originally appeared on Basketball Network.

Shortly after officially retiring, Bob Cousy discovered a new passion that would keep him connected to the game. Through sports broadcasting, “Cooz” was able to find a platform for his wealth of knowledge about the sport. In 1974, Cousy was hired as an analyst for the Boston Celtics on Comcast SportsNet and quickly became a familiar face and voice for the team’s media coverage.

Over the next 34 years, Bob became an integral part of the network, sharing his insights and experiences with a dedicated audience. However, this remarkably long tenure came to an abrupt end when the network unexpectedly decided to fire him in 2008.

While Cousy had no issue with the firing itself, Cousy emphasized that he would have appreciated a more dignified and respectful farewell, especially given his extensive career and lasting legacy with the franchise.

“Some low-level executive called me and basically said that they decided to do two-man booths, and they no longer needed my services,” the Celtics legend told the Worcester Telegram & Gazette at the time. “I said thank you very much, have a good year, and I hung up on him.”

“The Celtics, in my judgment, said and did all the right things,” Cousy added. “Comcast can hire or fire anyone they want. But after 34 years, I thought I needed a little more handling.”

Work was no longer “Cooz’s” priority

Even during his illustrious playing career, Cousy won the hearts of the Celtics faithful not only because of his exceptional talent but also because of his unwavering work ethic and dedication to the game. Bob’s passion for basketball was matched only by his genuine affection for the fans who supported him throughout his journey.

After retiring, “The Houdini of the Hardwood” carried these same admirable qualities into his post-retirement endeavors. With that in mind, “Cooz” found himself perplexed when the company chose to terminate his employment.

Despite the unfortunate ending to his time as a Celtics analyst, the Hall of Fame point guard candidly revealed that his job had never been his primary focus at that point in his life. Instead, Cousy remained committed to the things that truly mattered to him.

“You get to be 80, your priorities change,” the six-time champion opened up. “I enjoy keeping my hand in a minimal way. But obviously, this is a very exciting time to depart after 22 years of mediocrity. All of a sudden, it’s fun again for all of us. If I had my druthers, I would have preferred there not be a change, but is it a high-priority item? I doubt it.”
