Detroit Pistons await Jalen Duren decision as midnight deadline approaches

  • October 2, 2026

What to know:

Jalen Duren’s contract decision is due Thursday night. The Detroit Pistons center is weighing his options ahead of an 11:59 p.m. ET deadline.

Duren has three possible paths. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, he could sign Detroit’s reported five-year, $200 million fully guaranteed offer, accept a $9.6 million one-year qualifying offer, or take no action before the deadline.

The qualifying offer would change his free-agency status. If Duren accepts the $9.6 million offer, he would become an unrestricted free agent next summer. If he does nothing and the offer expires, he would remain a restricted free agent and could continue negotiating with Detroit.

Duren has remained away from the team. He did not attend media day or the start of training camp while the contract situation remains unresolved.

DETROIT – Detroit Pistons center Jalen Duren is weighing his contract options as the team waits for a decision ahead of Thursday night’s midnight deadline.

ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania reported Thursday (Oct. 1) on NBA Today that the Pistons are preparing for three possible outcomes as Duren considers his next move.

Duren could sign a five-year, $200 million fully guaranteed contract with Detroit, accept a one-year qualifying offer worth $9.6 million, or do nothing before the deadline.

If Duren accepts the qualifying offer, he would become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

If he does nothing, the qualifying offer would expire, and he would remain a restricted free agent while continuing to negotiate with the Pistons.

The Pistons’ five-year offer has been a major point of discussion throughout the offseason.

It was widely reported that a weight clause is no longer part of the proposal, which caused quite a stir among both sides.

Reports indicated the clause was never put in writing, as Duren is seeking a five-year, $287 million max.

Still, because of his lackluster playoff performance with the No. 1-seeded Pistons this past season, Detroit offered him $87 million less as the deadline nears midnight.

Duren has remained away from the team during the contract dispute and did not attend media day or the start of training camp.

He is coming off his first All-Star season and an All-NBA Third Team selection after averaging 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game.

Langdon: Pistons want Duren back

Pistons president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon said during media day on Sept. 28, 2026, that Detroit remains committed to bringing Duren back, regardless of his contract decision.

“He’s going to be a huge part of the team,” Langdon said.

Langdon declined to discuss the details of the negotiations, reiterating that the Pistons would not negotiate through the media.

“I will not be talking about negotiations in the media,” Langdon said. “I’ve done that all summer and it will not change here today.”

Langdon also said the organization has not begun planning for a future without Duren.

“I have not reached that at this point,” Langdon said when asked whether the Pistons had started preparing for that possibility.

He said the team would welcome Duren back and work to put him in position to succeed if he returns.

“Regardless of what decision he does make, he will be a Detroit Piston,” Langdon said.

Pistons prepare for season without Duren

While Duren’s status remains unresolved, the Pistons have continued preparing for the upcoming season.

Much of Detroit’s roster has been working out voluntarily, and Langdon said the team looks different after an offseason of roster turnover.

Detroit is coming off a 61-win season, but Langdon said the goal is not simply to win more regular-season games.

The focus, he said, is on becoming a better team when the playoffs arrive.

The Eastern Conference is expected to be more competitive, with several teams adding players and others getting key players back from injuries.

More shooting around Pistons’ core

Langdon said Detroit’s offseason moves were designed in part to create more spacing and versatility.

The Pistons added shooting at multiple positions, which Langdon said should give Cade Cunningham, Ausar Thompson and Duren more room to operate.

“I think we’ll be able to spread the floor better,” Langdon said. “I think we have more shooting at different positions too.”

Detroit also wants to reduce turnovers and give head coach J.B. Bickerstaff more lineup options.

Langdon highlighted offseason additions Isaiah Joe and Kevin Huerter as players who could help the team.

The Pistons acquired Joe in a trade involving two second-round picks.

Huerter joined Detroit without the team surrendering draft picks.

Duren situation has not stopped other moves

Langdon said the unresolved negotiations with Duren have not prevented the Pistons from making other transactions.

He also said he has not spoken with Duren during the summer but does not hold the situation against him.

“I have not spoken to the young man all summer,” Langdon said. “For me, I’m not going to hold anything against him.”

Langdon said that if Duren returns, the organization will focus on integrating him into the team rather than dwelling on the contract dispute.

The Pistons also remain open to improving the roster through trades and free agency, Langdon said.

“We’ll always look at different ways to get better,” he said. “Whether it’s through free agency or trade. And we’ll continue to do that.”

Duren’s contract situation is expected to come to a head by the 11:59 p.m. ET deadline Thursday.
