CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — One of the NBA’s most historic franchises has landed in the Lowcountry.
The Boston Celtics began training camp at The Citadel on Sunday, the 2nd NBA team to hold part of their preseason at The Military College of the South joining the Charlotte Hornets who worked out there from Tuesday through Friday of this week.
The Celtics become the 4th different team to work out at The Citadel in the last 5 seasons joining the Hornets, New York Knicks and the Philadelphia 76ers.
That’s one of the reasons Boston wanted to come here according to Celtics head coach Joe Mazzula.
“A little bit of it was other teams have been here before so they have a good environment set up on how to have great hospitality for that and other teams have been here so there’s a framework here.” Mazzula said. “Relatively close, not too far away and heard great things about it so excited to be here, really grateful for the hotel having us and for The Citadel making the facilities available to us”
The Celtics enter this season among the favorites to win the Eastern Conference title. Led by superstar Jayson Tatum who will be playing his first full season since suffering a torn ACL during the 2025 playoffs, the Celtics also feature former All-stars Paul George and Derick White along with former Sixth Man of the Year Payton Pritchard.
The team is scheduled to work out at The Citadel through Tuesday and leave the Lowcountry on Wednesday.
