While Charlotte Hornets fans fantasized about Stephen Curry eventually playing for the same team his father, Dell Curry, was a legend for, a new report suggests it was never a serious consideration.
Curry’s father played 10 memorable seasons for the Hornets. He was a core member of the roster during some beloved years and holds the record for most games played in a Charlotte uniform at 701. The franchise doesn’t have many legends, but the current Hornets television announcer is one of them.
Unsurprisingly, the idea of his son joining the team he grew up loving because his father was a player has always intrigued Charlotte fans. When the younger Curry said during an interview last year, “You always keep your options open,” after being asked about the possibility, it made it all seem possible. Especially since he was heading into the final year of his Golden State Warriors contract.
However, the dream officially died last month when the 12-time All-Star inked a new two-year extension with the Warriors. The deal seems to confirm he will finish his legendary career playing in San Francisco. But was a potential move to the Hornets at all realistic if he hit free agency next summer? Highly doubtful.

“When we talked at the end of last year, I asked him if [leaving the Warriors] was a consideration. And the first thing he said was, “I’m not moving my family. You know, my family is so important to me. They’re happy here,’” Golden State head coach Steve Kerr told NBC Sports. “He said, ‘I don’t want to go anywhere.’ And that’s a reflection of who he is as a father, as a human being.
“He meant that for his own personal family and his Warriors family, too. I can feel like he doesn’t want to go anywhere else. And I think he understands the power and the value of being, you know, the face of the franchise, not only while he’s playing, but even beyond.”
Curry signing that extension confirms he wasn’t lying because, as of now, the Warriors are not title contenders in the 2026-27 season and may even struggle to make the playoffs in the new season. That may be the case for the rest of his time with the franchise.
In the end, not uprooting his family and playing with one team his entire career meant far more to the future Hall of Famer.
