SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs return to the court tonight as they open their preseason schedule against the Atlanta Hawks at the Frost Bank Center.
The matchup marks the Spurs’ first game since their memorable 2025-26 season, which saw San Antonio finish 62-20, capture the Western Conference championship and advance to the NBA Finals before falling to the New York Knicks in five games.
Victor Wembanyama leads a Spurs team looking to build on that success and take another step toward an NBA championship.
Tonight’s preseason opener will give head coach Mitch Johnson his first opportunity to evaluate the team’s progress in game conditions, experiment with different lineups and determine how new additions fit alongside the returning core.
The Spurs enter the new season with a talented group that includes De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper and Wembanyama.
Veteran forward Tobias Harris, who is among the newcomers expected to provide additional experience and depth, will miss the preseason after he strained his left calf during training camp. He’ll be reevaluated after the preseason and could miss the season opener.
The Spurs are expected to give rookie Tarris Reed Jr. plenty of playing time during the preseason, while fellow draft picks Ja’Kobi Gillespie and Maliq Brown could also get opportunities to showcase their skills.
The Hawks, meanwhile, provide San Antonio with its first test as the Spurs begin preparing for another run through the competitive Western Conference.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Frost Bank Center. The Spurs will open their regular season Oct. 20 against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
This game is streaming only on the DAZN app, which will carry several Spurs games throughout the season.
