Brooklyn Nets forward Michael Porter Jr. has emerged as one of the top trade candidates after failing to sign a contract extension with the team so far this offseason.
The Brooklyn Nets enter another season full of uncertainty surrounding their long-term future.
The Nets don’t control their first-round draft selection for this season and they are likely to be focused on trying to build a contending team in the Eastern Conference with their main star being former NBA champion Michael Porter Jr.
The 28-year-old is entering the final year of his current deal worth $40.8 million and is likely to enter free agency next summer.
Although he might also become one of the most exciting stories to watch mid-season as he could emerge as one of the most sought-after trade candidates this season.
“I would just say that one player to watch this year just in general is Michael Porter Jr.,” NBA insider Brian Windhorst reported on The Hoop Collective podcast.
“There’s been a lot of attention paid to whether Karl-Anthony Towns got a contract extension which naturally why wouldn’t there be, the man’s a champion. Porter has not gotten a contract extension, he’s in the last year of his contract and he had a pretty good year last year after getting traded there by Denver and you know if a guy’s not in the contract extension you think about you see a possible trade candidate.”

Michael Porter Jr. has drawn plenty of chatter recently regarding his future in Brooklyn.
Porter Jr. is entering the final season of his five-year, $179.3 million contract in 2026-27. While currently extension-eligible, both he and the Nets have yet to reach a new deal.
Past reports indicated that the Nets would explore trade options if they failed to reach a contract extension with him.
Porter Jr. enjoyed a career-best season in 2025-26 in Brooklyn following last offseason’s trade from the Denver Nuggets. Appearing in 52 games, he averaged 24.2 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 3.0 assists, shooting 46.3% from the field and 36.3% from three-point range.
