If it’s one thing I’ve learned over the last few years, it’s to never tell people how to fan.
As GMAC always says, fan is short for fanatic. You’d have a better chance of house training a Tasmanian devil than controlling how people engage with their favorite team.
With that being said…
I was a bit taken aback over the last few days when I heard the “p” word uttered in connection to a team that had raised the Larry O’Brien trophy less than five months ago. I suppose panic would have been warranted if you bet your mortgage on the Knicks winning 70 games, but panic over whether they were still a very good basketball team? It felt like a bit much.
Maybe that camp of fans felt a little more emboldened in their skepticism after the first quarter last night, after which the Pistons led 38-25. I actually didn’t think the Knicks played all that badly over the first 12 minutes and that the score was mostly a bi-product of some unsustainably hot shooting, but still, 38 points is 38 points. Coming off a fourth quarter when you gave up 40 to the Magic, it was a tough pill to swallow. Even the calmer side of the fan base had to be wondering when, precisely, was the big wake up call going to come?
We didn’t have to wait long for our answer.
