The Thunder thanked local service members Thursday, giving about 250 National Guard personnel a chance to relax and be recognized.

The Oklahoma City Thunder are bringing the spirit far beyond the court, and they are saying thank you to local heroes.

The team was at the National Guard Museum for the annual Meals of Honor luncheon, where they thanked service members with a nice warm meal.

“With the help of our great partners Cannon and Associates, we are feeding our National Guard personnel. They’re coming in. We got about 250 personnel that we’ve fed across the state,” said Jennifer Watson, who oversees community engagement for the Oklahoma City Thunder.

While these men and women typically spend their time serving the country, it was their turn to be served on Thursday.

“Which is especially cool for me because I’m currently the lieutenant colonel in the National Guard, serving as a judge advocate,” said John Cannon with Cannon & Associates. “Service is something that we do with our family, with our kids, coworkers. So, getting to come together to share these experiences was really special because whenever an airman or soldier is in service, it’s their entire family in that service, as well.”

The event showed a small token of appreciation for their honor and service.

“Sometimes they’re not always acknowledged for what they do for the community, and I think this is a great way to give a little time out of their day to relax, celebrate with their fellow service persons,” Watson said.
