PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — The Rip City Remix, the official NBA G League affiliate of the Portland Trail Blazers, has appointed Jonah Herscu as the team’s new head coach, marking him as the third head coach in the franchise’s history.
Herscu brings with him 17 seasons of experience across the NBA, NBA G League, and WNBA.
He has spent the last three seasons with the Trail Blazers as an assistant coach under Chauncey Billups and led the 2023 and 2024 Trail Blazers Summer League teams as head coach.
Before joining Portland’s coaching staff, Herscu worked as an advance scout with the Sacramento Kings for two seasons from 2019 to 2021, later becoming an assistant coach for the 2021-22 season. His career also includes three seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he served as an advance scout and player development assistant in 2018-19 and as an assistant video coordinator from 2016 to 2018.
An Amherst, Massachusetts native, Herscu began his coaching career with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants of the NBA G League in 2013. He later worked as an assistant coach for the Chicago Sky of the WNBA and as a video coordinator for the Chicago Bulls.
Herscu succeeds Sergi Oliva, who returns to his role as an assistant general manager for the Portland Trail Blazers.
Additionally, Eli Kell-Abrams will take on the role of the Remix’s lead assistant coach. Kell-Abrams has spent the past two seasons as the Trail Blazers’ head video coordinator under Billups. His previous experience includes two seasons as the head video coordinator with the Philadelphia 76ers from 2021 to 2023 and three seasons with the Miami Heat as an assistant video coordinator from 2019 to 2021 and as a video intern in 2018-19.
