The Dallas Mavericks have agreed to terms with Jay Triano to join Jason Kidd’s coaching staff, a person familiar with the situation confirmed to The Dallas Morning News.
Triano will become the second-lead assistant on the bench behind Sean Sweeney, the person confirmed. Jared Dudley is also a front-of-the-bench assistant on Kidd’s staff.
The move is a strong indication that Kidd will remain in Dallas as coach after several reports indicated the New York Knicks had interest in interviewing the Mavericks coach for their head coaching vacancy.
Triano, 66, has more than two decades of coaching experience, including head coaching stops in Toronto and Phoenix. He previously served as an assistant coach in Sacramento for the last three seasons. Triano was an assistant coach in Charlotte from 2018 until 2022, which overlapped with Mavericks forward P.J. Washington.

Triano was promoted to associate head coach of the Kings after the 2023-24 season, following the departure of Jordi Fernandez, who was hired as Brooklyn’s head coach. He was fired by the Kings on May 3 after the franchise chose to restructure the coaching staff under new coach Doug Christie.
Triano, a native of Ontario, is a former member of the Canadian men’s national team and competed in two Olympics in 1984 and 1988. He also had two stints as coach of the national team.
