The San Antonio Spurs will enter the 2025 NBA offseason with plenty to do. De’Aaron Fox will enjoy his first offseason with his new team, two possible first-round picks will find a role for themselves, and the roster will continue to be tweaked around Victor Wembanyama.

Next season, it’s all but a given that Fox, Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, and Harrison Barnes will be starters. That leaves room for one more player, and an excellent shooter seems to be the best fit.

During the season, Devin Vassell showed flashes, although his 36.8 percent mark from 3 does leave fans wanting a bit more. Since being drafted, the Silver and Black loyal have believed that Vassell can blossom into a star or true second option, but it’s been proven that he is more of a high-level role player.

That’s not to say there isn’t room for him; there definitely is, but the Spurs will likely find a replacement for him in the starting five.

The Spurs have been linked, however loosely, to Kevin Durant, Jaylen Brown, and Bradley Beal this summer. Any of those three players would immediately replace Vassell in the starting five, providing another scoring punch next to Fox and Wemby.

Before the All-Star Break, when Wemby was still in the lineup, Vassell shot only 35.4 percent from deep. He got better as the season wore on, but with playoff hopes next year, the Spurs aren’t exactly in a spot to focus on development. They need to win.

Of course, our ideal roster would be Wemby, Fox, Barnes, Castle, and scorer TBD starting, with Derik Queen, Jeremy Sochan, Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, and Chris Paul coming off the bench. With the pick from the Atlanta Hawks, the Spurs will likely draft a player who will spend some time in the G League, someone raw like Collin Murray-Boyles, Asa Newell, or perhaps even Frenchman Nolan Traore. Someone with high upside but with plenty to work on.

Vassell, if he comes off the bench, will likely be a Sixth Man of the Year frontrunner. If he does start, there is full faith that he will be perfectly fine, but he hasn’t shown an ability to take the next leap over the last three seasons.
