It all moved fast, according to Desmond Bane. The 6-foot-5 shooting guard said he was vacationing in Destin when he first heard he was being traded from the Memphis Grizzlies to the Orlando Magic. The deal on Sunday rocked the league, which also saw the Magic send Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, and a slew of future draft picks to the Grizzlies. On Tuesday, dressed in the white with bold pinstripes Orlando Magic uniform, Bane spoke with reporters for the first time since the trade was made official. “It’s time to win,” Bane told WESH 2. “It’s pretty much as simple as that. If we do what we’re supposed to do … we have a lot of young talent here already in the building, and we have a lot of talent at the top of the roster, so I think it’s a perfect time for the organization to do what they did.” Bane, 26, said following his last season with Memphis, he told his agent if there was ever any chance that he would get traded during the offseason, Orlando was atop the list of destinations.”It’s a perfect fit,” said Bane.Bane also added, however, when he found out that he was being traded, it sank his heart. On Monday, Magic president of basketball operations Jeff Weltman said the team felt it was betting on itself following the blockbuster trade. “We feel that the other unique thing about Desmond being available to obtain in a trade is the fact that he’s just about to turn 27, and so if we are a good team, then we hope to be good team for a while because our age profile that’s most highly paid are ages 23 to 27,” Weltman said. Bane was brought in to assist a Magic team that has struggled from the 3-point line for some time, but significantly saw those struggles during the first round of this year’s playoffs, which saw the Boston Celtics oust the Magic. But does Bane’s arrival to the Magic shift the conversation on Orlando being title contenders? “I don’t see why not,” said Bane. “I haven’t been in the Eastern Conference, but if you look at our roster and our team, we stack up right there with anybody.” Magic coach Jamahl Mosley said Tuesday that he sees Bane fitting in and adding to the group’s continuity. “He’s very consistent. I know his catch-and-shoot 3s are huge,” said Mosely on Bane’s attributions. “He can also create his own shot. That’s very important as well, because as teams continue to load up and sit in the paint and waiting to stop our attacks, his ability to create his own shot but create for others is going to be huge.”
