Brooklyn Nets guard D’Angelo Russell is heading into free-agency after spending the 2024-25 NBA season as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers and the Nets. Russell has to decide if he will return to Brooklyn to be the veteran point guard that the team is looking for, but it seems like another team may be more attractive for what Russell could be looking for.
Per Marc Stein of The Stein Line in his post on X on Wednesday, the Dallas Mavericks are regarded as a leading suitor for Russell’s services in free-agency this offseason. Stein continues in his post by saying that Dallas could turn their eyes towards someone like Russell because of the new deal that the signed with star guard Kyrie Irving on Tuesday.

Russell, 29, is coming off a 2024-25 season in which he averaged 12.6 points, 5.1 assists, and 1.0 steals per game while shooting 39.0% from the field and 31.4% from three-point range in 58 games played for the Los Angeles Lakers and the Nets. Russell is an unrestricted free-agent this summer and as a result, he can pick where he wants to play as he seeks the best overall situation for him.
Prior to the end of the 2024-25 season, Russell said multiple times that he would like to come back to Brooklyn, the team that he has twice played for over the course of his 10-year career to this point. There has been no indication of the kind of contract Russell is looking for, but he finished a two-year, $36 million contract this past season that he signed while with the Lakers.
When it comes to the prospects of Russell coming back to the Nets, money shouldn’t be an issue given that Brooklyn leads the league in cap space as of this writing and would have to use some of that money to bring their free-agents back. The Mavericks are also in need of a point guard with Irving recovering from his torn ACL and Russell could be the kind of guy that Dallas could rely upon in the meantime.
