What to Expect in Round Two
Heading into the draft, it was rumored President of Basketball Operations, Tim Connelly, was looking to find a frontcourt player for the future. General Manager, Matt Lloyd, confirmed just as much as they selected Joan Beringer with the 17th pick.
Lloyd spoke to the media after the pick was made, glowingly stating that they now have a young promising player at every traditional position. He had mentioned and/or alluded to Rob Dillingham (PG), Jaylen Clark (SG), Terrence Shannon Jr. (SF), Leonard Miller (PF), and now Beringer (C).
What this means for their remaining pick at 31 is that it could very much be on the move. There was already chatter of Minnesota being interested in trading up or out of the draft yesterday, but now with at least one incoming rookie added to the roster, it seems more likely they just won’t have space for another one.
It’s still hard not to look at the list of available players and not get excited for some of them. Three of the 10 players who Andrew Carlson detailed are still on the board, though they’re all bigs (Ryan Kalkbrenner, Johni Broome, Rasheer Flemming).
Personally, elite stretch big Maxime Raynaud is a player I’m excited about. Then there’s other exciting wildcard swings such as athletic specimens in Adou Theiro or Sion James. How about seasoned scoring experts in Kam Jones and John Tonje?
There’s a lot of teams that have leaked interested in a number of those players. Namely the reigning NCAA Defensive Player of the Year, Kalkbrenner. Would the Wolves be able to dangle the opportunity for first dibs in the second round, where teams can get ultra creative with contracts, for a win-now veteran such as Lonzo Ball or Collin Sexton?
We’ll find out soon enough.
