For the first time since leaving Paris Saint-Germain in 2023 to join Inter Miami, Lionel Messi will face off against his old squad in the round of 16 of the Club World Cup. Much has changed for the Parisians with Kylian Mbappe also departing and Luis Enrique, Messi’s former coach at Barcelona, leading the club to their first Champions League title in their history, but it’s still a significant moment to clash with Messi in Atlanta.Â
PSG are among the favorites to win the entire competition, while Miami is the last team from Major League Soccer remaining in the tournament after upsetting Porto to advance from Group A. They’ll have a tough task on Sunday in Atlanta to get past PSG but can feel confident in knowing that Botafogo got the job done during the group stage. The round of 16 is where things get real, and the prize money on the line is significant, so both teams will leave it all on the pitch now that they’ve made it to this stage of the tournament, but as always, all eyes will be on Messi during the match.
