Texas A&M basketball’s 2025 backcourt was led by the program’s all-time leading scorer, Wade Taylor IV, and former SMU guard Zhuric Phelps, who spent his final collegiate season with the Aggies. While the 2024-2025 season ended with a second-round loss to Michigan in the NCAA Tournament, both players ended their college careers on a high note.
After head coach Buzz Williams departed for Maryland after six seasons, Texas A&M is now led by new coach Bucky McMillan, who has already rebuilt the 2025 roster from the transfer portal. Wade Taylor’s playing future will include a chance in the NBA, as the Dallas, Texas native was not selected in the 2025 NBA Draft, but has signed with the Milwaukee Bucks and will participate in the Summer League.

This was unsurprising given Taylor’s skill set and status as one of college basketball’s star players during the last three seasons. Just a day later, it was reported late Saturday night that Zhuric Phelps will stay in Texas and sign a Summer League deal with the Dallas Mavericks with a chance to earn a spot in the G-League next season.
Phelps, during his time at SMU and on season with the Aggies, saw a player with NBA potential due to his frame, defensive instincts, and mid-range game. Finishing second on the team with 13.6 points per game, Phelps’ most outstanding performance came during Wade Taylor’s absence on the road against Oklahoma, scoring a career-high 34 points, including finishing 6-10 from beyond the arc.
Averaging 1.8 steals per game last season, if Phelps can improve from the field after shooting nearly 37%, but only 25% from 3-point range, an NBA career is not out of the question.
