The Boston Celtics got their offseason off to a fast start when they traded Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis ahead of the 2025 NBA Draft. By making those trades, Brad Stevens took the Celtics under the second luxury tax apron, giving the franchise additional flexibility as they head toward free agency and beyond.

Following those two trades, rumors have swirled regarding potential deals for Derrick White and/or Jaylen Brown. Outside of Jayson Tatum, White and Brown are the crown jewels of Boston’s roster. Therefore, both of them would come at a considerable cost. During a recent episode of “The Zach Lowe Show” podcast, the long-time analyst reported that Boston “laughed” at an offer the Toronto Raptors made for White ahead of draft night.

“There were reports that the Raptors offered No. 9 for Derrick White,” Lowe said. “I’m told that’s true, but it happened like a month-and-a-half ago, right after Jayson Tatum got hurt, and Boston laughed at that offer and said, ‘We need way more than No. 9 for Derrick White.'”

In a June 28 edition of Jake Fischer’s column in the “Stein Line” newsletter, he noted how Boston are likely looking for a similar package to what the New York Knicks paid to acquire Mikal Bridges from the Brooklyn Nets last summer.

“Boston told at least one rival team that it would have insisted on a “Mikal Bridges-type” package to part with Derrick White, league sources say,” Fischer wrote on “The Stein Line” Substack newsletter on June 28. “The Celtics have certainly received no shortage of inbound trade calls on both White and Jaylen Brown in recent days, but nothing got serious on either front.”

White is one of the best two-way guards in the NBA. After losing Holiday, it’s unlikely Stevens signs off on a trade that sees White leave the franchise. Still, as Lowe reported, Boston’s high asking price hasn’t stopped teams from picking up the phone to test the waters.
