The United States men’s national team are through to the Gold Cup semifinals after beating Costa Rica in a dramatic penalty shootout on Sunday. The U.S. and Los Ticos tied 2-2 in regulation, and it was a 4-3 win in the shootout as goalkeeper Matt Freese may have just put himself in pole position to be the team’s starting goalkeeper at the World Cup next year with numerous crucial saves.

The U.S. conceded early before taking a 2-1 lead via goals from Diego Luna and Max Arfsten, only to concede in the 71st minute to force penalty kicks. Malik Tillman missed a penalty in regulation but converted his spot kick in the shootout.

Freese made three saves in the shootout while Tyler Adams, Tillman, Alex Freeman and Damion Downs converted there, the last of which sent the team to the semis.

The winners will now face Guatemala in the semifinals on Wednesday.
