As Kyrie Irving works his way back from his torn ACL, the Mavericks’ biggest offseason need was ball-handlers to fill the void left by Irving’s injury.

Dallas took another step to address that need on Wednesday.

After first signing D’Angelo Russell to a two-year deal, Dallas reportedly agreed to a one-year deal with Dante Exum, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

This gives Dallas 16 fully guaranteed standard contracts, meaning someone will have to go. Most likely means trading Prosper, but I also wonder about the market for Powell, particularly center-challenged Indiana and a certain coach who loved coaching Powell. https://t.co/41gzUE1K1Y

Exum re-signing with Dallas means the Mavericks have 16 fully guaranteed standard contracts, meaning the team will have to make a move to create a roster spot for Exum.

Charania said Exum considered two other contenders, but chose to re-sign with Dallas. Russell and Exum figure to share the ball-handling duties while Irving is on the mend.

Exum missed most of the 2024-25 season with a right wrist injury and a left hand fracture. In 20 games that included 13 starts, Exum averaged 8.7 points, 2.8 assists and 1.7 rebounds last season.
