The Boston Celtics just got a bit thinner in their frontcourt rotation, as ESPN senior reporter Shams Charania relates that backup Boston big man Luke Kornet has agreed to sign with the San Antonio Spurs in the opening hours of the NBA’s 2025 free agency period.
Per Charania, “Kornet has agreed to a four-year, $41 million deal with the San Antonio Spurs,” who he describes as a key frontcourt addition for San Antonio made possible by Kornet’s agent Max Wiepking of Gersh Sports. With the signing, Boston likely shifts its focus to retaining their other free agent big man in veteran forward Al Horford, who has also been the focus of at least one other ball club as a free agency target in the Golden State Warriors. The Dubs themselves just saw longtime center Kevon Looney sign with the New Orleans Pelicans, so the Celtics will have a motivated opposition to bid against.
As it currently stands with Boston, only Neemias Queta and Xavier Tillman Sr. currently play the 5 among players on Boston’s roster, so there may be an effort to land another big via trade or free agency for the Celtics in the coming hours and days.
