As we get closer to the 2025 NBA Draft, we are already starting to hear rumors about which top prospects are drawing the most attention from teams.

This year, it appears that two of those players have something in common. One is Oklahoma Sooners freshman guard Jeremiah Fears and the other is Texas Longhorns freshman Tre Johnson. While both received plenty of hype during the NCAA season, it appears that is only continuing during the pre-draft process.

Here is more from NBA draft insider Jonathan Givony (via ESPN):

“Both Fears and Tre Johnson will be getting looks […] potentially starting at No. 3, as there is quite a bit of enthusiasm in NBA circles around both prospects’ long-term futures. Fears’ late-season performances in the SEC and NCAA tournaments highlighted the significant star power and potential he possesses as a primary shot creator who can get paint touches at will, score in a variety of ways and find teammates creatively on the move.

Johnson’s superior positional fit […] readiness to contribute and his size and length will keep him firmly in conversations here, too, with the outcome of workouts, interviews and background research likely to have significant sway […]”

Fears, indeed, played particularly well down the stretch for the Oklahoma Sooners.

Here is what we wrote about Fears after March Madness:

“One scout who spoke to For The Win said that Oklahoma’s Jeremiah Fears was his favorite player to watch during March Madness.

According to the scout, Fears looked at his best under the bright lights of the tournament. He was described as an “elite scorer” who is “very clutch” and that made him difficult to stop. He moves the ball well and it is hard to stay in front of him and he plays well against pressure.

Even though Fears is the second-youngest American player (behind Cooper Flagg) projected to hear his name called in the 2025 NBA Draft, opposing teams had Fears highlighted on their game plans. But there was still very little to do to stop him even though he was the head of the snake in the Sooner offense.”

It remains noteworthy to hear that both Fears and Johnson have developed so much “enthusiasm” in NBA circles, especially as we approach the 2025 NBA Draft Combine and pre-draft workouts:

Johnson has also looked impressive in the gym, according to draft experts:

Hard to find a more impressive prospect in a workout setting than Tre Johnson. 6’6, with ridiculous shot-making prowess and machine like consistency, Johnson looked awfully impressive in Santa Barbara. pic.twitter.com/fExPGe4b1M

While it is unlikely that either player can catch either Cooper Flagg or Dylan Harper for the No. 1 or No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, it is fascinating that No. 3 is potentially up for grabs.

Harper’s teammate, Rutgers forward Ace Bailey, was typically projected at No. 3 overall in mock drafts.

Baylor’s V.J. Edgecombe is another top candidate who is likely going to hear his name in a similar range.

But it seems that as of right now, the No. 3 overall pick is wide open depending on which team secures it in the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery on May 12 in Chicago.
