BOSTON — The obvious, in-your-face headliner from the Celtics’ Game 1 loss to the Knicks was the droves of missed 3-pointers. The C’s set an NBA playoffs record by missing 45 3s over the course of the night, shooting just 15-for-60 from deep. It was a mark of futility as the C’s coughed up a 20-point lead to fall behind 1-0 to the Knicks in the East semifinals.

But after looking at the film, Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla had a revealing take when it came to those looks. While there was certainly frustration when it came to some key shots down the stretch of Monday’s loss, for the most part, it’s not like they were putting up heavily-contested 3-pointers.

“I loved the majority of our shots,” Mazzulla said. “There was probably 10 or 11 you could probably take back considering the ebbs and flows of how the game was going at that particular time. So you have to be able to do both. You have to be able to make open shots and you have to have that understanding of the ebbs and flows of a game. Coaching shot selection’s always easy. Hindsight’s always 20/20.”

Mazzulla’s message was clear the day after the loss. He spoke about the duality about being asked about the Celtics’ misses, while on the other end, the Knicks converted their 3-pointers from deep. Considering it was a tight overtime contest, the margin between win and loss was narrow with even just one shot being a potential difference-maker.

Regardless, the Celtics have a chance to bounce back for Game 2, set for 7 p.m. Wednesday at TD Garden. They lost home-court advantage but they’re still favored to advance past the Knicks to the East Finals. Notably, they did generate great looks throughout the night, which is a stark difference compared to the Magic series. So, aside from cleaning up the looks that weren’t as clean, the Celtics will look to convert and actually make 3-pointers like they did in the regular season.

“Obviously, a lot of talk about 3s, but I think a lot of them are good looks,” Derrick White said. “There’s obviously a few that we probably could have got a better look or keep working til we get a good one. But whether it’s a layup or a 3, just continuing to trust that process.”
