BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Ramsay High School rising senior Cameron Blankenship recently represented Alabama on the world stage.
Blankenship and his teammates won the Pyrenees Basketball Cup, an international youth basketball competition that took place last month in Spain.
“The experience was for sure a confidence booster because not many people had seen that type of basketball,” said Blankenship.
Blankenship, the only player from Alabama on a team that was selected by an organization called the Student Athlete World, met his teammates for the first time in the airport in New York on the way to Europe.
Even though the group hadn’t met before, they were all in agreement about what they were traveling overseas to do.
“I ain’t ever seen or heard of a USA team losing. So, I’m thinking, we gotta win. For the first three games it wasn’t clicking, but then it started to,” said Blankenship.
And once it clicked, it was over from there. Blankenship is now back in Birmingham preparing for his senior season with Ramsay.
“That was kind of cool knowing that I was the only person from Alabama,” said Blankenship. “I felt like I had to make a statement.”
