LAS VEGAS ― Word gradually spread that former Memphis Grizzlies guard Yuki Kawamura would not be returning to the team after one season.

The expected move was confirmed after the Grizzlies didn’t extend Kawamura a qualifying offer, making him an unrestricted free agent. Kawamura was then picked up by the Chicago Bulls, which led to a post from Grizzlies star Ja Morant on July 3.

“yukiX12 dont die,” Morant posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Kawamura is now participating in summer league action with the Chicago Bulls. While his career is heading to a different chapter, the 5-foot-7 point guard was grateful for his time with Morant and the Grizzlies.

“I miss Memphis, for sure,” Kawamura said. “Memphis people are so nice. I wanted to play in Memphis this year too, but it’s business. I’m satisfied right now. The Bulls organization is great. Good opportunity for me.”

Morant, who arrived in Las Vegas to watch the Grizzlies on July 12, made sure to catch Kawamura’s game, even though he couldn’t make it in person. He’s also sharing Kawamura’s summer league highlights on social media as often as his current teammates.

When Kawamura joined the Grizzlies, the relationship between him and Morant was noticeable. The two quickly bonded, often seen dancing together and learning handshakes. Morant was also one of the Grizzlies players who helped Kawamura learn American slang phrases.

“I already miss him,” Kawamura said. “He’s such a great guy. He’s my big brother.”

If the two aren’t able to catch up in Las Vegas, they could cross paths soon again. Morant is scheduled to begin an Nike International tour on July 18. He’ll eventually make his way to Tokyo, Japan.

Kawamura, a Japanese native, is hopeful he can be in Japan when Morant arrives on July 31.
