The Philadelphia 76ers were looking to finish the summer league up on a high note when they faced the Brooklyn Nets at the Thomas & Mack Center on Friday evening. Despite sitting out VJ Edgecombe, Justin Edwards, Adem Bona, and Johni Broome, the Sixers were looking to see what they had in other youngsters.
In a strong overall effort, Mark Armstrong and Judah Mintz played well as they were able to knock off the Nets 87-83 in Las Vegas. Armstrong had 23 points and seven rebounds while Mintz had 20 points, five rebounds, and four assists.
Keve Aluma had nine points and five rebounds, Hunter Sallis added seven points. five rebounds, and two steals, and Saint Thomas had nine and three steals. Jalen Slawson had seven points, 10 rebounds, three steals, and four blocks.
Here are some thoughts on the Sixers after a summer league finale win over the Nets:
Hunter Sallis
On a day the Sixers were missing a lot of their key summer league pieces, Sallis knocked down a 3 early to get Philadelphia going in the right direction on the offensive end. When considering who was on the sidelines, he could have been a bit more aggressive from the start of this one, but Sallis had some good moments. His time in the G League will help him in the upcoming season. He is going to need to develop a 3-point shot.
Judah Mintz
This was a solid summer league finale for Mintz. He continued his aggressive nature to get himself moving in the right direction in terms of keeping the scoreboard moving for a Sixers team in need of somebody to do so. He and Sallis did some good things on the defensive end to disrupt Brooklyn’s guards. His ability to get to the foul line is uncanny and something that can be taken to build upon in the league at some point.
Saint Thomas
A young player who hasn’t gotten much playing time in the summer league, Thomas got some early run in this one and he didn’t waste it. He gave the Sixers a big boost on the offensive end as he was able to spread the floor with his 3-point shot and finished well around the basket. He also did some helpful things on the defensive end of the floor.
Mark Armstrong
One has to be impressed with Armstrong. The young man has a knack for scoring the basketball. He hopped off the bench and got right to it in this one as he was able to produce at a high level on the offensive end. One has to believe the Sixers will certainly keep him around the program in an effort to develop him and keep him pushing. He was efficient in this one as well as being helpful on the glass.
Keve Aluma
For the second straight game, Aluma made some big plays in the fourth quarter. His ability to put the ball in the basket and rebound the ball is a huge help for this group. One has to believe he has some type of future in the NBA, but he will need to be in t he G League for a bit.
Izan Almansa
One can see that Almansa has some skill. He just has a long way to go. He will need to develop either in the G League or overseas before he gets a real NBA opportunity, but he has the skill and the want to perform at this level. He just needs so much development.
Jalen Slawson
It was an overall tough performance for Slawson as he was unable to contribute much on the offensive end, and he had some bad turnovers, but he was helpful on the glass so the Sixers have to be happy with that. He can do a lot of different things on the floor, but there are times when it seems like he gets frustrated when things don’t go his way. With that being said, he can be an NBA player. He has the talent. He just needs to develop some more. He was terrific on the defensive end in this one.
