GREENSBORO, N.C. — The North Carolina East-West All-Star basketball game, a tradition since 1949, will once again bring the state’s top senior players to the Greensboro Coliseum on Monday night. Among those representing Eastern North Carolina are two standout seniors from Swansboro: Jermaine Cunningham and Tayvion Tangiora. Cunningham averaged 17 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, while Tangiora contributed 18 points and 9 rebounds per game, helping the Pirates reach their first-ever Eastern Conference finals.
Joining them from Windsor is Bertie’s Zymiere Dempsey, a dual-sport athlete who averaged a double-double with 23 points and 10.7 rebounds. New Bern’s Jussan Wiggins, who averaged 15 points per game, rounds out the four players on Team East. Calvin Campbell, Wiggins’ coach, will be one of the two coaches for the game. Campbell is already in Greensboro, eager to participate in the event, which begins with the girls’ game at 6:30 p.m., followed by the boys’ contest.
In Major League Baseball, former ECU Pirate Gavin Williams had a standout performance for Cleveland, striking out 11 in seven innings and allowing just one run in an 8-2 victory over the Athletics. Williams, who has a 3.54 ERA this season, recorded his sixth win.
In Canadian football, former ECU player Justin Hardy made seven receptions for 47 yards in the Ottawa Redblacks’ matchup against Hamilton, though the Tiger-Cats secured a 27-15 win.
On the racetrack, Denny Hamlin clinched his second consecutive win in Dover, Delaware, after a rain delay pushed the race into overtime. Hamlin managed to stay ahead of Chase Briscoe on the Monster Mile, a track he has now mastered despite early struggles.
In golf, Scottie Scheffler claimed victory at the 153rd British Open with a 17-under finish, marking his second major win this year and fourth overall. Remarkably, it took Scheffler 1,197 days to achieve his fourth win, the same duration it took Tiger Woods to reach his fourth from his first. If Scheffler wins the U.S. Open in 2026, he will complete golf’s Grand Slam.
