News broke today of a legendary point guard returning to their old stomping grounds. Chris Paul is going back to the Los Angeles Clippers and it’s giving Oklahoma City Thunder fans ideas.

Shams Charania wrote on Twitter/X, “Twelve-time All-Star Chris Paul has agreed to a deal with the Los Angeles Clippers, CAA’s Steven Heumann, Ty Sullivan and Jessica Holtz told ESPN. Paul had multiple suitors, but chose the contending Clippers and their shared history in L.A. for his likely final, 21st NBA season.”

This now marks the second major 2010s legend at the point guard spot to return to the team that made them famous. Damian Lillard was the catalyst for this movement when he chose to go back to the Portland Trail Blazers on a three-year, $42 million deal on July 17.

The recent trend has Thunder fans eyeing one of their own old players. The thought on their minds might be something along the lines of ‘why not.’

Russell Westbrook continues to be available on the free agent market, in search of his next team. Could reuniting with one of the most beloved figures in franchise history be in the cards?

Westbrook did just recently invest in a new downtown district in the city of Oklahoma City. Surely, that may inspire some good will. In all seriousness, this one is more than likely not happening.

For starters, the Thunder’s roster is already packed. Creating room for Westbrook would be a tough task, if the desire was there.

Secondly, there is no obvious reason to think the Thunder, who are coming off a championship, need a boost in what Westbrook still has to offer at this stage of his career. Perhaps if Oklahoma City was still in tank mode, it would provide a good story. That just is not the case with the franchise anymore.

Westbrook should be able to find a new home before all is said and done in free agency. A return to the first franchise to embrace him is undoubtedly among the unlikeliest of paths to unfold this offseason.
