Cooper Flagg’s time in the NBA Summer League did not last long. The Dallas Mavericks shut down the No. 1 overall pick after his second game, a dominant performance against the San Antonio Spurs and No. 2 pick Dylan Harper.
He showcased exactly why he is one of the best prospects to enter the NBA in quite some time, finishing with 31 points, four rebounds, four assists, and one block. He shot an impressive 47.6% (10-21) from the floor and 33.3% (3-9) from 3-point range. That was more than enough for the Mavericks to end his time in Las Vegas as he prepares for his rookie season.
Matt MacKenzie, his player development coach, explained to Brad Crawford of CBS Sports about what the plan is for Flagg over the coming weeks.
“Cooper will head back to Dallas to get settled in and workout at the Mavs practice facility before heading to Maine in August for a couple weeks,” MacKenzie said. “He’s headlining a basketball camp for a couple days, and we’ll continue his training up there as he prepares looks ahead to the rookie transition program and the start of training camp.”
Flagg will have a ton of pressure in his rookie season. Despite being just 18 years old, he is expected to make an immediate impact and help Dallas get back to the playoffs.
