Future Devils girls basketball program reignites opportunity in Quincy

  • July 27, 2025

QUINCY (WGEM) -Basketball is a big deal in Quincy, but it’s been eight years since younger girls have had a program that harnesses their basketball skills.

“This is my 5th year coaching girls’ basketball and just noticing our numbers have been depleting,” said Quincy Junior High Girl’s Basketball coach Elizabeth Seals.

Seals saw a need for a program to help younger girls work on their basketball skills and that’s how the Future Devils program came about.

“When we first started junior high girls, I think we had 18 girls for sixth, seventh and eighth grade, then we have grown the program, so last year we had 30, but now just trying to get the skillset up for when they come to sixth grade seventh grade and just promoting basketball,” Seals said.

Not only does the program help Seals for her junior high team, but it gives the younger girls a chance to be a part of the basketball community.

“Just like values, being a good person, not everything’s about winning, like being able to develop and looking to the future. The collaboration and being a family are what we’re trying to teach,” Seals said.

On the high school level, QHS girl’s head basketball coach Brad Dance said he’s looking forward to reaping the rewards of the program in a few years’ time.

“It seems to be really helpful for the girls and especially for us because we’re going to see the numbers increase so that’s the big thing,” Dance said. “We have the last couple of years; the numbers were down a little bit. They were down at the junior high and it carried over to the high school. Well now we get them started and pretty involved in elementary and keep working their way up where they’re involved, it’s only going to help us down the road.”
