WAYNESBORO, Va. (WHSV) – New Valley Church and the Waynesboro Parks and Recreation department partnered up to host the first New Valley Classic.
This free three-on-three basketball tournament was hosted at the Rosewald Community Center to bring the surrounding community together.
“New Valley Classic is something we are hoping to continue moving forward, but it is an opportunity for the youth of the entire valley to get together and compete in a game of basketball,” said Calen Wilson, the New Valley Church Event Coordinator
New Valley Church wanted to connect with the youth in the community through something they enjoyed, such as basketball.
“Our entire goal is to get kids doing something active and positive during the summer,” Wilson said.
Youth from around the area came to this event, a participant in the tournament, Micah Adams said
“We have really built our lives around basketball and Christ,” said Micah Adams, “and when he let me know that this was through a church organization and we have a lot of buddies that are here from my youth group we all just kind of said it is for a really good cause its free so we just come out and hoop some.”
Adams said it was fun to play the sport they enjoy while just having fun, “no prizes or anything.”
As this was the first time having this event, Wilson said he hopes to make this an annual tradition for the city of Waynesboro.
“It is so exciting to get to bring the kids together to do something positive during the summer,” Wilson said.
