OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Tony Osburn had a choice at the end of Omaha men’s basketball’s run in the NCAA Tournament last season: chase new opportunities in the NCAA transfer portal or stay and build on the team’s success.
He chose the latter.
“There was a dude who took a chance on me when I was a senior in high school and I don’t think I could leave a place that’s done so much for me,” Osburn said.
The Mavericks’ incoming senior guard is coming off his best season as a junior, averaging 12.2 points per game on 43.9% shooting from the field. He said the decision was easier knowing what he would be giving up by leaving.
“Every game at Baxter I look up and see about 25 of my family members in the crowd and friends,” Osburn said. “I just don’t know how I could leave a place that’s really done so much for me and, really, my family.”
Head coach Chris Crutchfield said Osburn will likely take on a bigger role at point guard this season and that he is embracing his role as a leader.
“He starts practice, he finishes practice, he’s the guy that’s yelling and hooting and hollering around, but he’s also making plays for us,” Crutchfield said. “He’s our quarterback. I’m excited about his year. He’s going to have a very good year.”
