The Sacramento Kings have displayed a strong sense of interest in free agent guard Russell Westbrook since free agency started last month–and that interest hasn’t waned.

Amidst a swirl of rumors and reports linking the Kings to Westbrook, Sactown Sports’ Carmichael Dave relayed that the two sides continue to have strong interest in one another.

Westbrook, who most recently played with the Denver Nuggets during the 2024-25 season, is looking for a new home in free agency, with Sacramento appearing to be a potential landing spot for the future Hall of Fame guard.

And they should be.

It’s not done, but it’s been cooking for a while. And there is strong interest from both sides.

I’d say 80-20 he’s a King https://t.co/1MlotQLdhX

More on the Sacramento Kings & Russell Westbrook

At 36 years old, with 17 years of NBA experience, Russell Westbrook’s resume is well known: MVP, 8-time All-NBA, 9-time All-Star, 2-time Scoring Champion, and 3-time Assist Champion.

However, he has filled roles on contending Pacific Division teams in each of the last few seasons, both as a starter and reserve. Let’s take a look at his 2024-25 production in 75 games played (36 starts) with the Nuggets:

2024-25 Averages: 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, 4.9 rebounds on 44.9/32.3/66.1

Russell Westbrook joining the Kings would be intriguing on paper, but Sacramento is already dealing with a logjam at the guard spots.

Recently signed guard Dennis Schroder, Malik Monk, Zach LaVine, Keon Ellis, and Devin Carter are all currently in the mix for minutes at the one and two, with Terence Davis (non-guaranteed contract for 2025-26) also in the mix for training camp.

The Kings are also still in the mix for restricted free agent forward Jonathan Kuminga, also there hasn’t been much traction in sign-and-trade talks with Golden State. Sacramento may be looking to offload one of its guards to add Kuminga and free up a guard slot for Westbrook, who could sign for the veteran’s minimum–although it’s also possible he requests more to join a Kings team that many believe will finish next season near the bottom of the Western Conference standings.

Adding Russell Westbrook could make the Kings one of the oldest teams in the NBA, with 30+ year olds DeMar DeRozan (36), Schroder (32), Dario Saric (31), and Zach LaVine (30) already on the roster.

Whether or not the fit makes sense, Sacramento has its eyes on Westbrook, and the dog days of the offseason could bring clarity to Westbrook’s–as well as Kuminga’s–free agent solution as the start of training camp moves within two months away.

The Sacramento Kings continue to be linked to Golden State Warriors restricted free agent forward Jonathan Kuminga.

ClutchPoint’s Brett Siegel joined The Allen Stiles Show on Friday to provide an update on their latest sign-and-trade negotiations.

Plenty of conversation has recently surrounded 3&D guard Keon Ellis and whether or not he could be involved in a deal. Plus, with the Warriors seeming to be waiting on potential free agents Al Horford, De’Anthony Melton, and/or Seth Curry, the Kuminga situation seems to be holding things up.

Siegel says he doesn’t believe there is much of a market for the 22-year-old at this point. Between Sacramento and the Phoenix Suns, offers are on the table, but “Golden State didn’t want what they were offering.”
