The Milwaukee Bucks announced July 30 that recently signed guard Gary Harris will wear No. 11 for the team, which had been worn by former Bucks great Brook Lopez for the past seven seasons.

Lopez, 37, signed a two-year deal with the Los Angeles Clippers on June 30.

He had been with the Bucks since 2018, won a championship with Milwaukee in 2021, became a 3-point shooting threat and secured two all-defensive team nods. In his final season, the team won the 2024 NBA Cup.

Lopez played 469 regular season games (466 starts) in seven seasons with the Bucks, shooting 35.7% from behind the 3-point line while averaging 13.0 points per game. He also averaged 2.1 blocks per game for Milwaukee.

He finished his career in Milwaukee second in franchise history in blocked shots, third in blocks per game and fourth in 3-pointers made and attempted.

Before his tenure in Milwaukee, Lopez played for the New Jersey and Brooklyn Nets, where he is still the franchise’s all-time leading scorer. Also he played one season with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Jersey retirements can be tricky and usually reserved for a handful of people. It’s as if that player, and the person, are tied to the franchise and city forever (unless they revoke it, of course).

NBA legend Marques Johnson’s No. 8 wasn’t retired by the Bucks until 25 years after he retired from the league. Also, Bob Dandridge, part of the 1971 Bucks championship team, didn’t have his No. 10 retired until 2015 and played most of his career in the ’70s.

Every other retired player for the Bucks was immortalized in the rafters within a year of retiring from the NBA, except for Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who was added in 1993.

The Bucks likely wouldn’t make a decision on a jersey retirement until the player is no longer playing in the NBA. The team’s spokesperson didn’t respond to a request for comment.

But the news that Harris will be wearing No. 11 left some debating whether anyone should wear the number again for a team and city where Lopez left a legacy, alongside other greats who have departed like Khris Middleton and Jrue Holiday.

What are the Bucks’ retired jersey numbers?

The Bucks have 10 retired jersey numbers if you include No. 6, which was retired for all teams in 2022 following the death of NBA legend Bill Russell. The other nine numbers are:
