The San Antonio Spurs were viewed as one of the top destinations to land Kevin Durant this offseason.
However, the Phoenix Suns made an ambitious demand for the Slim Reaper, resulting in the San Antonio Spurs backing out from the sweepstakes.
Kevin Durant was ultimately traded to the Houston Rockets as the Suns finally moved on from their failed Big 3 experiment.

Even with missing out on Durant, the Spurs currently have one of the best young cores in the league, spearheaded by Victor Wembanyama.
In addition, the Spurs have Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper, and De’Aaron Fox, who recently signed a $229m extension with the team.
Despite the roster more or less being complete, ESPN insider Brian Windhorst believes that the Spurs will be an attractive free agent destination when the time comes.
“San Antonio has more going for it than people want to give it credit for. It’s very much a growing city. … The next superstar that becomes available will consider the Spurs,” Windhorst said on The Hoop Collective.
While Windhorst didn’t say that the next superstar free agent would join the Spurs for sure, he pointed out that the organization would be in consideration.
Tim MacMahon on Kevin Durant to San Antonio Spurs rumors
Coming back to the KD to the Spurs rumors, Windhorst’s co-host, Tim MacMahon, discussed the implications of them for future stars.
“Since they got Wemby, you’ve been talking about it. San Antonio’s going to be a destination for players. And they didn’t engage in the KD bidding, but they were on Kevin Durant’s list,” MacMahon stated.
Before the Spurs potentially land their next big superstar, the franchise has an important task for the 2025-26 NBA season.
It’s none other than clinching a playoff berth to further intrigue the interest of future superstar free agents.
