Victor Wembanyama is working out with the wrong MVP this offseason, according to an NBA reporter who gave two alternative players.
The San Antonio Spurs star is entering his third season in the NBA. His rigorous offseason continues, as he was photographed working out with MVP and champion Kevin Garnett. This comes after Wembanyama spent time in China this summer training with monks. You read that right.
This season is important for the Frenchman, who missed a significant amount of last year with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in his right shoulder. Happily, he has been cleared to return, but carries big expectations on his shoulders.
Alongside All-Star De’Aaron Fox, who just signed a max contract, number two pick Dylan Harper, and Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle, he is expected to make the playoffs for the first time. But an NBA reporter said Garnett isn’t the man who can best improve Wembanyama’s game.
Kevin Garnett is not the best person for Victor Wembanyama to work out with, says NBA reporter
Wembanyama is a defensive phenom. He was well on his way to winning the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year award in his second season last year, averaging a league-leading 3.8 blocks per game.
He remains some way off the league’s best, however. He shot 35.2% from three on nine attempts per game- an insanely high volume from deep for someone listed at 7’3”.
Garnett was one of the greatest defenders in NBA history, but NBA reporter David Dennis Jr said he should be working with one of the NBA’s all-time greats on the other end of the floor.
On NBA Today, he suggested two different former MVPs. He said, “Defensively, I think the guy’s got everything.
“Offensively, he’s been working with a lot of different people. I would like to see him get in the lab with someone like [Kevin Durant], get those three-point percentages up, especially off the dribble.
“Also getting his shot in different places around the court, in the midrange, things like that. We know he’s worked with some of those low-post people.
“I think somebody like a KD, or Dirk [Nowitzki], those guys can help with the versatility offensively, especially as defences try their best to figure out what to do with a guy like him.”
He is in the conversation for the best defensive player in the NBA, but a consistent offensive game would put Wembanyama in the discussion for the best player in the league. Developing a midrange and post game like Durant and Nowitzki would make Wembanyama unstoppable.
It’s time for the San Antonio Spurs to start winning
Through his first two NBA seasons, Wembanyama has lived up to the hype. Going into the draft, he was dubbed the greatest prospect since LeBron James, and his individual performances have matched his hype.
But the Spurs have missed the playoffs in both seasons, and if he truly is a generational talent, he needs to start winning some games.
That’s not easy in the stacked Western Conference. He’ll have to contend with the LA Lakers, led by Luka Doncic and LeBron James, the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder, and the Denver Nuggets with three-time MVP Nikola Jokic.
The Houston Rockets traded for Durant, and the Golden State Warriors are always a threat, led by NBA legend Steph Curry.
The Spurs have a roster brimming with young talent, and if Wembanyama is the player he is expected to be, a postseason appearance is a must.
