Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg is considered a possible option to represent USA Basketball in the 2028 Olympic Games, according to early projections by CBS Sports.
USA Basketball, led by Grant Hill, is expected to have plenty of players to choose from to fill out its 12-man roster for the tournament in Los Angeles, California. The team will likely feature some holdovers from the group that won gold last year, with plenty of new options in the mix.
The players from last year who figure to be back for 2028 are Bam Adebayo, Devin Booker, Anthony Davis, Anthony Edwards, Joel Embiid, Tyrese Haliburton and Jayson Tatum, leaving five open spots to fill, assuming each is willing to return.
Hill & Co. will likely face difficult decisions when assembling the next group as the host team. The other five players that could round out the roster are Paolo Banchero, Jalen Brunson, Cade Cunningham, Donovan Mitchell and Jalen Williams.
On the radar: Evan Mobley, Jaylen Brown, Cooper Flagg, Amen Thompson, Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges, Jaren Jackson Jr., Ja Morant, Zion Williamson, Trae Young, Tyrese Maxey, LaMelo Ball, Tyler Herro, De’Aaron Fox, Brandon Miller, Trey Murphy III
Cuts from 2024: LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Jrue Holiday, Derrick White
Flagg went viral last summer after scrimmaging with the select team against the senior roster ahead of the Olympics at just 17. He earned praise after that showing from Kevin Durant, Chet Holmgren and Hill as the first collegian to participate since 2013.
The 6-foot-8 forward dazzled in spurts in the scrimmage against the Olympic roster. From splashing 3-pointers in front of Davis, to drawing defenders such as Holiday, Flagg put on a show against a roster that won its fifth straight gold medal.
Hill said last year, at the start of the Olympics, that Flagg had a strong showing with the select team. He believed Flagg had a bright future ahead and could even be in the mix to earn a place on the 2028 roster, with additional development and experience.
The next Olympic Games are still three years away, meaning plenty can change over that time frame regarding the next group of players who could represent the U.S. The team has a deep pool of players to consider, and Flagg should be among those in the mix.
