With the Los Angeles Lakers’ current roster setup, they’ve made it clear they’re targeting an NBA championship. Yet, even though they’ve filled some of their holes this offseason, there are still some roster flaws.

With LeBron James and Luka Dončić on the same team, it’s time to strike while the iron is hot. One way the Lakers could do so is by bringing in a star scorer capable of putting up at least 20 points per game while taking the pressure off their two stars.

DeMar DeRozan Floated as Trade Target for the Lakers

PFSN’s Brandon Austin explained why Sacramento Kings wing DeMar DeRozan would appeal to a contender to aid in their title quest.

“Despite his production, DeRozan’s contract makes him a logical trade chip,” Austin wrote. “He’s in a three-year, $73.89 million deal with a $24.75 million cap hit in 2025-26 and a $10 million partial guarantee in 2026-27. That structure offers value to teams seeking short-term scoring help without long-term risk. With that said, he’s almost 36 and offers limited defensive impact, so his market may be limited to teams offering role players or picks.”

Austin explained how the Kings could use DeRozan to improve their future in a potential trade.

“Sacramento could use DeRozan’s flexible contract to shed salary or acquire pieces that better align with its younger core. With a new general manager and a shift toward rebuilding, the Kings should be exploring trade options.

“DeRozan’s midrange scoring remains elite, but his age, contract, and fit suggest Sacramento could move him after a disappointing season.”

For that reason, Austin listed the Lakers as one of DeRozan’s potential landing spots.

While DeRozan’s contract is team-friendly, for the Lakers to consider him, it feels like they would also have to part ways with Austin Reaves. By all accounts, Reaves has been an excellent third wheel next to James and Dončić, so on the surface, there doesn’t seem to be much logic to trading him.

However, if the Lakers want to improve themselves around the edges, that could lead to a Reaves trade, and then they could entertain a DeRozan swap. Not only is DeRozan a scorer, but he is a playmaker.

Even at this stage of his career, the veteran forward can still shoulder a hefty offensive load. That would be ideal for the 40-year-old LeBron, as it could allow him to rest for a few games.

DeRozan is a tantalizing option for the Lakers, but only if they make the appropriate trades first.
