An entertaining opening weekend in the Premier League continues on Sunday at Old Trafford, where Manchester United host Arsenal as both sides kick off a consequential campaign.
The Gunners travel to Manchester with one objective in mind this season – winning the title for the first time in 20 years. Arsenal have finished runners-up in the last three campaigns so a make-or-break season awaits for manager Mikel Arteta, who will have a host of new signings to work with in the hopes of climbing out of second place. Sweden international Viktor Gyokeres is the most notable of the newcomers, joining the Gunners after scoring 97 goals in 102 games for Sporting Lisbon, hopes high he can translate his form in Portugal to consistency in England. Midfielder Martin Zubimendi could also make his competitive debut for Arsenal after joining from Real Sociedad as another player the Gunners hope will be a final piece to their title-winning puzzle.
They will meet a United side that has a fresh start in front of them – and uncertainty to match it. Manager Ruben Amorim will kick off his first full season in charge on Sunday after a chaotic start to the job, one that included their lowest-ever Premier League finish of 15th. United responded by signing players to match Amorim’s tactical vision for the team, the club splashing on the likes of forward Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig and midfielder Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers. Much as it does for Arsenal, Sunday’s game offers the Red Devils a chance to debut a new look, one they hope will correct course after a disappointing season.
