When it comes to his on-court tactics, former Boston Celtics head coach Doc Rivers is not exactly held in the highest regard, given several high-profile early exits in the NBA playoffs since leaving Boston for the Los Angeles Clippers. But when it comes to the opinion of Hall of Fame Celtics forward Kevin Garnett, the notion that Doc is not one of the league’s sharpest minds is an anathema.
Per the Big Ticket on a recent episode of the Milwaukee Bucks official “Hear District,”Doc is probably one of the more intelligent people I’ve ever met.”

“He’s always coming up with quotes, always having quotes, always having things in the chamber that he hits you with,” added Garnett. “He’s definitely a chess player.”
“He was one of the stimulants, one true stimulants in our league that I actually value,” offered the former Boston big man. “When we actually talk basketball, he was able to be another elite of Xs and Os.” In fairness to Doc, he has had one of the most successful careers as an NBA head coach, even if he has struggled to get back to the mountaintop since his time in Boston.
But it’s also safe to say that KG has had a better view on what Rivers actually does as a head coach than most, suggesting that the truth is probably somewhere in the middle.
