Chet Holmgren is using this offseason to sharpen his shooting skills ahead of the 2025-26 NBA season. After helping the Oklahoma City Thunder win their first NBA title, the Thunder forward is eyeing the next ring. The 23-year-old signed a supermax rookie deal with the franchise and focuses on getting even better.
Recently, in a viral clip, he worked out intensely, which sparked laughter among fans. But this dedication indicates something bigger he wants in the next season. Holmgren is working to improve his balance, footwork, and shot consistency. With shooting coach Drew Hanlen’s help, he takes a detailed approach to fine-tuning his offensive game.
“I’ve been working on my shot all summer. Even before you, I got out of here with Drew. Just continuing to work on that stuff. Working on being on balance, playing off of bumps, slowing down,” Holmgren said. “The attention to detail. Two people can do the same move, but it really takes perfection to really make the move effective. And he doesn’t let anybody slip up on the details. If he sees something, he’s going to say something.”
The Thunder’s innovative contract management helped them stay flexible. Holmgren’s and Jalen Williams’ max deals are structured to avoid future salary cap issues. With a deep young roster and room to improve, the Thunder remain in a good position to chase a second straight title.

Holmgren suffered from injuries and played just 114 of 246 games in three seasons for the Thunder. Still, with his length and instincts to dominate on the court, he is one of the best defenders in the league when healthy.
Despite his substantial numbers, ESPN recently ranked him third in their defensive player of the year forecast, behind Victor Wembanyama and Evan Mobley. Holmgren averaged 2.3 blocks per game and posted a top defensive rating last season.
With the next season coming soon, Holmgren has a chance to elevate himself more in the ground he is best at.
