Former Dallas Mavericks star Luka Dončić is featured in a national advertising campaign for the Overwatch 2 video game, but while promotional billboards are popping up around the country, don’t expect to see one near American Airlines Center.
The popular video game franchise planned to display a billboard featuring the Los Angeles Lakers guard just steps away from the home of the Mavericks, but the team requested that the advertisement be moved to a D-FW location farther away from AAC, according to an email obtained by The Dallas Morning News.
The request was not made by anyone within the Mavericks’ ownership group or senior leadership, a person familiar with the situation told The News. A photo posted on social media appeared to show the digital billboard displayed in front of the arena, but it is not real, the person told The News.
Dončić, who is competing in EuroBasket for the Slovenian national team this week, is also featured on Overwatch-themed billboards across Los Angeles and Katowice, Poland, where the tournament is being held.

Dončić, who is available as a build in the Overwatch universe as “Luka Dunkcic” Lucio, is an avid fan of the first-person shooter and has achieved Grandmaster status – one of the game’s highest competitive ranks. He’s reached a Top 500 ranking in North America, which he shared on social media during the Mavericks’ run toward the 2024 NBA Finals.
“Many have seen how competitive I am on the basketball court, but you may not know that I’m just as competitive when I’m playing Overwatch,” Dončić said in a statement highlighting his partnership with Overwatch 2. “I love this game, and am excited about this partnership. It’s special to be in the game in a way that other players can be part of.”
Dončić is fresh off signing a three-year extension to remain in Los Angeles and will begin his first full season with the Lakers on Oct. 21 against the Golden State Warriors.
