Star Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown often gets ribbed about his supposed lack of ability to go left on the court. And while the rep the Georgia native has for that supposed directional deficiency in his handle may be considerably overblown, the advantage being a lefty outright as an NBA player can be very real, with many of the league’s best players in history having either been ambidextrous or favoring their left hand on the court.
As the league’s most storied franchise in terms of both titles and regular season wins, there have also been a number of Celtics alumni known for their lefty status. League analyst Frank Urbina of our sister site HoopsHype put together a list of their top lefty NBA players of all time, and sure enough, it has a notable number of Boston alumni.
Let’s take a look at which ones, when they played for the Celtics, and where they fell in HoopsHype’s estimation.
No. 25 – Tayshaun Prince (2015)
“He was far from a star, but for a time, Prince was an excellent role player, helping Detroit reach back-to-back Finals and six straight Eastern Conference Finals from 2002-03 through 2007-08,” notes Urbina.
No. 9 – Artis Gilmore (1988)
“Very productive and for a long time, lefty Artis Gilmore spent 17 seasons between the NBA and ABA, in six of which he received All-Star honors,” writes HoopsHype.
No. 7 – Dave Cowens (1970-80)
“Cowens helped lead the Boston Celtics to two more championships of the dynasty of the ’60s, one in 1974 and another in 1976, and did so thanks to his high-energy style of play, his rebounding and his ability to knock down jumpers from his frontcourt spot,” recalls Urbina.
No. 6 – Nate Archibald (1978-83)
“Archibald didn’t enjoy much team success as a team’s best player, but once he became a role player later in his career, he made the playoffs four times, including in 1980-81 when he helped the Boston Celtics hoist that year’s championship,” writes HoopsHype.
No. 1 – Bill Russell (1956-69)
“One of the league’s founding fathers and most important – and accomplished – players ever, Celtics legend Bill Russell won an NBA-record 11 championships, a feat we can confidently say will never be broken,” writes HoopsHype.
