Joe Mazzulla recently signed a multi-year contract extension with the Boston Celtics. The decision to extend him this summer was certainly a vote of confidence as the Celtics prepare for a retooling season that could see them struggle to qualify for the playoffs. Nevertheless, Mazzulla’s recent successes with the franchise were more than worth rewarding with a fresh contract.
Nonetheless, Mazzulla will find himself facing a different type of battle this season. Rather than competing for a championship, his primary remit will likely be to help develop some of the younger talent on the roster while putting them in position to succeed on the court. Still, Mazzulla’s time as an assistant coach on Boston’s staff has likely prepared him for the challenges ahead.
