The Brooklyn Nets are a little over one week away from the beginning of the 2025-26 NBA season when training camp starts on Sep. 24. As of this writing, Brooklyn is heading into camp with more than a few players that will have to be taken off the team before the regular season comes around, but the organization is still concerned with acquiring more talent.
ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on Monday that the Nets traded for Atlanta Hawks guard Kobe Bufkin in exchange for cash considerations. While Charania did not elaborate on how much cash Brooklyn is sending to Atlanta, the main focus of the deal is the fact that the Nets will be bringing in another point guard to compete for playing time amidst the early stages of this rebuild.
Bufkin, 21, was the 15th overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft after a sophomore season at the University of Michigan that saw him perform into a first-round level NBA talent. Due to a combination of injuries and being the backup to star Trae Young, Bufkin has only played in 27 games during his first two seasons in the league for a Hawks team that hasn’t made the playoffs since the 2022-23 campaign.
In the 2024-25 season, Bufkin averaged 5.3 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game while shooting 38.3% from the field and 21.1% from three-point land in 10 games played. Bufkin’s second season in the league was cut short on Dec. 19 when the Hawks announced that he would undergo surgery to address a right shoulder instability and will miss the rest of the season.
Heading into training camp, the Nets will now be adding Bufkin to a rotation of three other point guards that the team selected in the 2025 NBA Draft: Egor Demin (No. 8 overall), Nolan Traore (No. 19), and Ben Saraf (No. 26). Brooklyn may be more incentivized to find playing time for Bufkin moving forward as he is owed $4.5 million this season and $6.9 million in 2026-27 (team option).
