LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Ever since Texas Tech left Atlanta’s Omni Coliseum by winning an 84-82 thriller over Ohio State to win the 1993 Women’s Final Four, the legacy has continued for the next three decades.
Naismith winner Sheryl Swoopes would soon enjoy a successful career as a professional and become an ambassador for women’s basketball across the globe. Marsha Sharp, who was the long-time Lady Raiders head basketball coach, now has a freeway named in her honor. Krista Kirkland now has the same job leading the Lady Raiders and is known as “Coach Gerlich”.
That year’s team posted a record of 31-3 and held a 13-1 record in Southwest Conference play. The ‘93 Lady Raiders started off the tournament beating Washington at the historic Lubbock Memorial Coliseum, before they took out USC and Colorado up in Missoula, Mont.
A week later in Atlanta, they pulled away to gain victory against Vanderbilt and would do the same one day later against Ohio State. In that championship game, Swoopes registered a record 47 points.
The ceremony will take place Sunday, Nov. 16 at the United Supermarkets Arena as this year’s Lady Raiders host Arkansas. This will also be the second time for Swoopes and Coach Sharp to earn such honors. Both have been previously inducted.
